The driver was Mark Light, of Reading, PA, who ran out of gas on the final lap. I will also add that a 1939 Buick Century coupe won the first-ever recognized stock car race held at Langhorne Speedway outside of Philadelphia in 1939. I've had 11 Specials and 1 Century in my life. This is not a faulty childhood memory, but just one of my memories that served to make me love 1939 Buick Special's. The fastest I ever drove the blue car at left is around 75 mph, but I have a 3.9-1 optional rear from a Century in this car. This is one of my memories that is etched into my mind. A friend of theirs was following in a 1939 Packard 120 and couldn't keep up. The speedometer on my parents' '39 Buick Special was bouncing between 100 and 105. When I was ten years old, my father got into a race with a hoped up 37-38 Chevy hotrod. I agree that because they need to be mounted high because of the short front end, they look odd on the 1939 Specials. Only about 200 1939 Buicks were sold here. Regarding sidemounts - they were always an option in the US I believe, but in NZ our Buicks came standard with "six wheel equipment". Even though it only cruised at about 40 mph in overdrive it was much more relaxed that in normal top gear. I drove a 1920 Briscoe which had a 1960s British overdrive unit in it and it made a big difference. It would be nice to be able to add an overdrive as can be done with open drive shaft cars. I know of a 1941 car here that had its rear end gears replaced with something from the 1950s. One problem with gearing the car up is that they do not have that much power and you can lose hill climbing ability. I think it can be done with 1937(?) and later cars with hypoid drive but more difficult with the earlier ones. There have been several threads on this site from people looking to raise the axle ratio - not easy with torque tube drive. I recall here in NZ there was a 1939 Buick owner who firmly believed his 1939 Special would do 100mph and would not listen to reason - the engine would have to exceed 5000 rpm to do it - an impossibilty! Any more than the for an extended period is hard work for the babbit rod bearings. At 3400 rpm which is its realistic maximum it is doing about 67mph. From this we can work out that it does 510 rpm per 10 mph. In this case the info is given (engine speed at 50mph is 2550rpm). You can calculate the academic top speed of any car as long as you know the overall final drive ratio and the outside diameter of the rear wheels. I want to be able to pass some petrol stations! I'm happy to drive at 55 mph on a good road. That's all a bit too fast for me in a 71 year old car. It also includes the following: "The smoothness of the engine and general quietness of running encourage high cruising speeds and we found that the car willl quite naturally settle down to a genuine velocity of 65-68 m.p.h." It claims 82 mph max in top gear and 50 in 2nd. provide first-class illumination for driving at speeds of 60-70 m.p.h." The reprint is a review of "The Buick Straight 8 Viceroy Saloon." The Viceroy was the Buick Special as marketed in Great Britain. "Buick Cars 1929-1939" published by Brooklands Books, Walton on Thames, Surrey, England contains a reprint from "The Motor" July 18 1939. The handbook charts indicating fuel consumption have 70 mph in the upper range. The 1939 manuals and handbooks do not claim a maximum speed. The authorities met with the hostel’s owner, who claimed Carla checked out with her belongings around 5:10 AM. T-Mobile records indicated a brief internet connection from Carla’s phone at around 12:17 AM on November 28, suggesting it could have been unintentional or possibly due to external factors. At 8:20 PM, she sent a WhatsApp message to the group chat, mentioning her desire to go out but for her fatigue.Ĭarla’s phone suddenly went offline at 9:00 PM, cutting off all communication. During the conversation, she mentioned feeling thirsty and expressed her intention to ask one of the security guards to buy her water, given the rain. She FaceTimed with a friend from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM, discussing her thoughts about visiting the jazz club. However, natural calamities disturbed her plans, and she sent a message via WhatsApp to a group chat with friends, expressing concerns about heavy rain and a power outage at 6:55 PM. Carla sent April a photo of her accommodations and informed her of her plans to visit a jazz cafe at 6:30 PM. Later in the afternoon, the Uber driver returned her to the villa. She paid the driver in cash and sent family photos of her enjoying the city, purchasing a purse and earrings. She took roughly 30 to 50 minutes to change and prepare while the Uber driver waited. Around 1:04 PM, Carla arrived at the Villa Buena Vista hostel in San Jose. Police sources stated her Uber driver offered her a tour of the city, which she accepted. She hailed an Uber to reach the hostel at 12:23 PM. After dropping April at the airport, Carla returned their rental car to Thrifty Car Rental. Based on their interviews with family members and witnesses, the authorities constructed a timeline of the hours leading to her death. She had been repeatedly stabbed with the knife breaking due to the force used, and her jaw was dislocated. Who Killed Carla Stefaniak?īased on the evidence, the police believed Carla was murdered in her room and sexually assaulted before the killer dumped her body in the woods. Despite advanced decomposition, the coroner determined seven wounds, including once in the palm of her hand. Forensic investigators determined she had suffered blunt force trauma to her head, a broken neck, and knife cuts all over her body. The authorities found her half-naked body partially wrapped in plastic in a wooded area behind the hostel. After she did not come online the following day and missed her flight, her family reported her missing. She remained in contact with family and friends over social media till her phone went offline around 9:00 PM. She dropped April off at the Juan Santamaría International Airport in San Jose at 11:30 AM and checked into the Villa Buena Vista hostel in San Jose around 4:00 or 5:00 PM. Her dream was to travel around the world.” He described his sister as “the friendliest and most lovely person I feel you would meet.” While both women were scheduled to return to the US on November 27, Carla extended her stay for one more day to celebrate her birthday. Her brother, Carlos Caicedo, said, “Traveling was Carla’s passion. According to her family, Carla was addicted to social media, and she constantly posted updates of their adventure, including selfies while attending surfing classes, hanging out with April, shopping, and traveling to the beach. The Miami resident arrived in Costa Rica on Thanksgiving Day - Novemwith April. Born on November 28, 1982, Florida insurance agent Carla Stefaniak traveled to Costa Rica with her sister-in-law, April Burton, for a dream vacation for her 36th birthday. "Subtractive colors are those which reflect less light when they are mixed together," says Raiselis. Additive color theory is based on objects that emit light, while subtractive deals with material objects like paintings. So the distinction in color systems really comes down to the chemical makeup of the objects involved and how they reflect light. "The long-wavelength sensitive cone, for example, has peak sensitivity in the yellow-green part of the spectrum, not the red part." "It is often mistakenly written that RGB are optimal because the visual system has receptors in the eye that respond optimally to red, green and blue light but this is a misconception," he says. Most sources will tell you red, green and blue are the additive primaries, as Newton originally proposed, but Westland says it's a lot more complicated than that. Your computer screen and TV work this way."īut the range - or gamut - of colors that can be produced from three additive primaries varies depending upon what the primaries are. When mixed together, red, green and blue lights make white light. And the red and green also make a lighter color - and a surprise to nearly everyone who sees it - yellow! So red, green and blue are additive primaries because they can make all other colors, even yellow. The red and blue mix is lighter too, a beautiful magenta. (Spoiler: We're about to get into secondary colors!) "When the blue flashlight circle intersects the green one, there is a lighter blue-green shape," he says. The subtractive primaries also modulate red, green and blue light, but a little less directly." The additive primaries do this very directly by controlling the amounts of red, green and blue light that we see and therefore almost directly map to the visual responses. Those are roughly sensitive to red, green and blue light. "That is to modulate the responses of the three types of cone photoreceptors in our eyes. "Both systems are accomplishing one task," says Mark Fairchild, professor and director of the Program of Color Science/Munsell Color Science Laboratory at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. This leads to two types of colour mixing, additive and subtractive." "Light enters our eyes in two ways: (1) directly from a light source and (2) reflected from an object. "We see because light enters our eyes," he says. Stephen Westland, Professor of Colour Science at the University of Leeds in England breaks things down into simple terms, in an email. MATLAB ® supports cross-validation and machine learning. For larger datasets, techniques like holdout or resubstitution are recommended, while others are better suited for smaller datasets such as k-fold and repeated random sub-sampling. Because each partition set is independent, you can perform this analysis in parallel to speed up the process. However, it is a critical step in model development to reduce the risk of overfitting or underfitting a model. This approach often produces overly optimistic estimates for performance and should be avoided if there is sufficient data.Ĭross-validation can be a computationally intensive operation since training and validation is done several times. The error is evaluated by comparing the outcome against actual values. Resubstitution: Does not partition the data and all data is used for training the model.Stratify: Partitions data such that both training and test sets have roughly the same class proportions in the response or target. This technique has a similar idea as the k-fold but each test set is chosen independently, which means some data points might be used for testing more than once. Repeated random sub-sampling: Creates multiple random partitions of data to use as training set and testing set using the Monte Carlo methodology and aggregates results over all the runs. Also known as leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV). Leaveout: Partitions data using the k-fold approach where k is equal to the total number of observations in the data and all data will be used once as a test set. This method performs training and testing only once, which cuts execution time on large sets, but interpret the reported error with caution on small data sets. Holdout: Partitions data randomly into exactly two subsets of specified ratio for training and validation. You can clearly see that this is required by examining the logic and code above. Finally, to answer your question, you would need K * d distance calculations, with K being the number of examples and d being the number of classes. With this simple nearest mean classifier, we have an accuracy of 92.67%. To get a sense of the accuracy, we can simply compute the fraction of the total number of times we classified correctly: > sum(c = id) / numel(id) We finally find the class with the smallest distance for each example. The third line of code computes the distances vectorized so that it finally generates a 2D matrix with each row i calculating the distance from the training example i to each of the mean vectors. data = permute(meas, ) ĭata and means_p are the transformed features and mean vectors in a way that is a 3D matrix with a singleton dimension. If you wanted to do this for the entire dataset, you can but that will require some permutation of the dimensions to do so. We choose the class that gives us the smallest distance. Once that's done, I choose a random data point from the training set then compute the distance from this point to each of the mean vectors. Load in the dataset and since the labels are in a cell array, it's handy to create a new set of labels that are enumerated as 1, 2 and 3 so that it's easy to isolate out the training examples per class and compute their mean vectors. % Determine which class has the smallest distance and thus figure out the class X = meas(10, :) % Choose a random row from the dataset Means(i,:) = mean(meas(id = i, :), 1) % Find the mean vector for class 1 Means = zeros(3, 4) % Store the mean vectors for each classįor i = 1 : 3 % Find the mean vectors per class = unique(species) % Assign for each example a unique ID Since you chose MATLAB as the language, allow me to demonstrate with the actual iris dataset. Whichever one has the smallest distance is the class you'd assign. After, to classify a new feature vector, simply find the smallest distance from this vector to each of the mean vectors. You find the mean feature vector for each class, which would be stored as m1, m2 and m3 respectively. For the case of the iris dataset, you have three classes. In your training set, you have a set of training examples with each example belonging to a particular class. By doing this, the classifier simply boils down to finding the smallest distance from a training sample x to each of the other classes represented by their mean vectors. This is a fair assumption which means that you expect that the distribution of each class in your dataset are roughly equal. The most important point is when the priors are equal. However you shouldn't be paying attention to that. It is quite common to assume that each class has the same standard deviation, which is why every class is assigned the same value. s in this case is the sample standard deviation for the training set. The notation is standard with most machine learning textbooks. I believe this should help out groups, the final boss is still a cakewalk, but just in case, slap on a nature protection amulet so you can stay in the puddles without too much trouble. The more rends out, the faster things die, and the less of a threat they'll be.ĥ) Nullifying Oblivion - Use this on soldiers that have had a chance to put up that defense mechanism. I personally light tank with a Strike Amulet, Strike Ring, and Earring, but just an amulet swap is usually enough for most DPS and healers.Ĥ) Rends - Rend everything you can ASAP as well. This amulet alone can be the difference between you dying to a back swipe and surviving. Other weapons can also help CC, so don't be afraid to stun those Soldiers and clumps.ģ) Mid boss - Strike resistance amulet, HUGE. I suggest using something similar to this as the tank: Hammer Build CC's are going to save not only you but your entire group. Do the same with bosses, and try to keep that uptime on weakness as much as possible.Ģ) CC's - Tanks, don't be afraid to play with your big ass hammer. Everything else doesn't do as much damage as this guy. Immediately just skewer, maelstrom, and weaken that enemy ASAP. Shield rush also does weakness! 20% in fact for a long time, and in an AOE. If you can have another spear sub-hand, even better for more weakness stacks. It's my personal suggestion that each group has a spear main with Skewer on the weapon and another DPS with Greataxe as their sub hand weapon and Enfeebling Maelstrom on the weapon. Spear and Greataxe will be especially critical here. I primarily play tank for my static group, so my perspective is a little different, but I'll post tips for DPS as well, and a few that I've observed from a healer perspective.ġ) Weakness - Weakness is going to be huge for surviving these dungeons, and Genesis is no exception.
